Mykonos, is one of the most famous islands in Greece and one of the world's most popular holiday resorts that has been welcoming visitors for over half a century.
It is is part of the Cyclades, lying between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos. The largest town, Mykonos, which lies on the west coast is also known as Chora.
Mykonos' nickname is "the island of the winds". Tourism is a major industry. Widely known for its nightlife, Mykonos is called "Ibiza of Greece" for its summer club scene which attracts a very large number of tourists every year. In Greek mythology, Mykonos was named after its first ruler, Mykons, the son or grandson of the god Apollo and a local hero. The island is also said to have been the location of a great battle between Zeus and Titans and where Hercules killed the invinsible giants having lured them from the protection of Mount Olympus.
Mykonos has over 20 world famous beautiful golden sandy beaches and transparent waters.
